As a result, these geographical features have allowed the Belendina to thrive for centuries, becoming a gastronomic symbol of the region. According to a popular legend, the Belendina onion made its way to the area thanks to a tenant farmer from a Turin family who brought the seed from the sea in the early 1800s, thus giving rise to an agricultural tradition that has become deeply rooted over time.
Decline and Rediscovery
Over the years, the Belendina onion spread to all the Ligurian gardens. However, starting in the 1960s, due to increasing urbanization, its cultivation faced a severe decline. Nevertheless, thanks to the commitment of a passionate Ligurian farmer, Trentino Bellenda (affectionately known as Trentin), this onion variety was rediscovered and preserved. The name “Belendina” is a tribute to his dedication in bringing this local delicacy back to life.
